Ingredients

Filling
  • 1 pound Ground beef Use lean ground beef for a healthier option.
  • 1 cup Mozzarella cheese, shredded Feel free to use low-fat cheese if desired.
  • 1/2 cup Cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1/2 cup Diced onion Yellow or white onions work best.
  • 2 cloves Minced garlic
  • 1/2 cup Sliced bell peppers Any color of bell peppers can be used.
  • 1/2 cup Sliced black olives Optional for added flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon Olive oil For sautéing the vegetables.
  • to taste Salt
  • to taste Pepper
  • 1 whole Egg For egg wash.
Dough
  • 1 package Pizza dough Store-bought or homemade.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large pan, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the diced onions and cook until they become translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Add the ground beef to the pan, breaking it up as it cooks. Season with salt, pepper, and minced garlic. Cook until the beef is browned and no longer pink.
  4. Stir in the sliced bell peppers and optional black olives into the beef mixture. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until the peppers are slightly softened.
  5. On a lightly floured surface, roll out your pizza dough into a rectangle, leaving a small border around the edges.
  6. Spoon the beef mixture over the rolled dough, spreading it out evenly. Sprinkle the mozzarella and cheddar cheese on top of the beef.
  7. Starting from one long edge, carefully roll the dough into a jelly roll shape. Pinch the ends to seal.
  8. Using a sharp knife, make a few cuts on the top of the roll to allow steam to escape during baking.
  9. Beat the egg in a small bowl and brush it over the top of the dough for a beautiful golden finish.
  10. Place your Garbage Bread on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  11. Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly before slicing. Serve warm for the best experience.

Notes

Feel free to customize the fillings by adding cooked veggies like mushrooms or spinach, or switch the meat for ground turkey or chicken. Great leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.
