Ingredients
  

For the cake batter
  • 1 box 425g yellow cake mix
  • 1.5 cups 360ml water
  • cup 80ml vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs
For the apple filling
  • 6 apples, peeled and sliced Use a variety like Granny Smith and Honeycrisp for best flavor.
  • 3 tbsp 45g brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp 15ml lemon juice
For the crumb topping
  • ¾ cup 95g all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup 100g brown sugar
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ cup 115g cold butter, cubed Use cold butter for ideal crumb texture.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the yellow cake mix, water, vegetable oil, and eggs. Mix until the batter is smooth.
  3. Pour the batter mixture into the prepared pan.
  4. In a separate bowl, toss the sliced apples with 3 tablespoons of brown sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice.
  5. Spread the apple mixture evenly over the batter in the pan.
  6. In another bowl, mix the all-purpose flour, ½ cup of brown sugar, and salt. Add the cold, cubed butter and mix until crumbly.
  7. Sprinkle the crumb mixture over the apples.
Baking
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 35 to 60 minutes.
  2. Check doneness by inserting a toothpick in the center; it should come out clean.
Serving
  1. Allow the cake to cool completely before serving. Dust with powdered sugar if desired.

Notes

This cake can be enjoyed warm or at room temperature. Pair it with ice cream or whipped cream for added delight. You can store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days.
