Preparation
- In a large bowl, gently mix the ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, diced onion, salt, and pepper until just combined. Be careful not to over-mix.
- Form the mixture into 6–8 oval-shaped patties and let them rest.
Cooking
- In an oven-safe skillet, brown the patties on medium heat for about 3–4 minutes on each side until golden brown.
- Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside.
- In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and sauté them in butter until softened.
- Sprinkle in the flour and stir for about 2 minutes.
- Gradually whisk in the beef broth and heavy cream, ensuring there are no lumps.
- Nestle the browned patties back into the gravy.
- Cover the skillet tightly and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 45 minutes.
- After 45 minutes, remove the cover and bake for an additional 15 minutes.
- Let the skillet rest for about 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
Allow the patties to rest after forming to help them hold their shape during cooking. For a thicker gravy, simmer for a few extra minutes after adding the broth and cream. Feel free to add peas or carrots for extra color and nutrition.
