Ingredients

For the patties
  • 2 lbs Ground beef (80/20 blend for best flavor)
  • 1/2 cup Breadcrumbs (Plain or seasoned)
  • 1 large Egg (Beaten)
  • 1 medium Onion (Finely diced)
  • 2 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Black pepper
For the gravy
  • 3 tbsp Butter (Salted or unsalted)
  • 3 tbsp All-purpose flour (For thickening gravy)
  • 2 cups Beef broth (Low sodium preferred)
  • 1 cup Heavy cream
  • 1 medium Onion (Sliced)
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large bowl, gently mix the ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, diced onion, salt, and pepper until just combined. Be careful not to over-mix.
  2. Form the mixture into 6–8 oval-shaped patties and let them rest.
Cooking
  1. In an oven-safe skillet, brown the patties on medium heat for about 3–4 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  2. Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and sauté them in butter until softened.
  4. Sprinkle in the flour and stir for about 2 minutes.
  5. Gradually whisk in the beef broth and heavy cream, ensuring there are no lumps.
  6. Nestle the browned patties back into the gravy.
  7. Cover the skillet tightly and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 45 minutes.
  8. After 45 minutes, remove the cover and bake for an additional 15 minutes.
  9. Let the skillet rest for about 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Allow the patties to rest after forming to help them hold their shape during cooking. For a thicker gravy, simmer for a few extra minutes after adding the broth and cream. Feel free to add peas or carrots for extra color and nutrition.
